KELOWNA, BC, May 2, 2016—Sandhill Wines is proud to announce the official launch of the much-anticipated Soon Series, a new limited edition release featuring two wines crafted by Sandhill Master Winemaker Howard Soon – Soon Chardonnay 2014 and Soon Red 2013.
Soon Series is a showcase of the wisdom that has come from Howard Soon’s 20-year tenure with Sandhill. Forging valued partnerships with the region’s finest growers and championing a terroir-driven approach has consistently led to award-winning single vineyard wines for the brand.
“In making the Soon Series wines, the terroir was very important, as it gives the grapes distinctive qualities,” explained Soon. “With minimal handling, processing and technology, we’ve allowed the grape to shine through.”
Richard Cleave, the grape grower at Phantom Creek Vineyards, has worked and walked alongside Howard for over 35 years, and together they have shared their experiences within the vineyard. Their combined respect for terroir shows in every bottle of wine.
“Before harvesting began, I approached Richard about producing a super-premium red blend, and he had an interesting idea of picking all the varietals at the same time, crushing them, and fermenting them together,” explained Soon. ”I was reluctant at first, but I agreed to harvest half the grapes this way and the other half were kept separate. I was so impressed with the finished wine that we decided future blends were going to be 100% co-fermented for the Soon Red.”
Hand harvested from the Phantom Creek Vineyard, Soon Red was aged in new American and French oak barrels for 22 months, with a co-fermented blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. With a seductive bouquet of cedar chest, humidor, spice box, ripe black currant, plum and black cherry, this full-bodied wine has firm but not aggressive tannins, great structure and moderate acidity. The extra-dry finish shows wonderful notes of black tea, cassis, vanilla bean and cocoa.
“After daily visits to the Sandhill Estate Vineyard, I, along with Robert Goltz, the grape grower at Sandhill Estate Vineyard who I have worked with for over 30 years, chose a single block of 18 year old Chardonnay vines for the Soon Chardonnay, which provided the true expression of this unique site where the grapes were hand-harvested and hand-sorted,” said Soon.
Aged in stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels for 10 months, the Soon Chardonnay yields two barrels, with notes of yellow apple and grilled lemon, accented by cedar chest and vanilla. This medium-bodied Chardonnay has a slightly rich approach, but remains lean and fresh throughout.
The limited edition bottles of Soon Chardonnay 2014 and Soon Red 2013 are now available for purchase at Sandhill’s urban winery located at 1125 Richter Street in Kelowna, BC. For further information, visit www.sandhillwines.ca.

Why the Press Release Doesn’t Cut it Anymore
When I was in PR school, the most important tool we learned about was the mighty press release. Our instructors drilled into us the importance of the inverted pyramid, the power of a lede, and the many requirements of Canadian Press style (which, admittedly, I use on a daily basis). This was over a decade ago, but as a current …Read More
